WhatsApp has officially announced that it will be taking down it’s App from various smartphones from Jan 1, 2018. The company says that it will no longer support iPhone 3GS/iOS 6, BlackBerry OS, BlackBerry 10, Windows Phone 8 and older.
These are the reports that we will be seeing live in a few days. But there are also come other announcements for the future by WhatsApp.
WhatsApp mentioned that it will be removing its App from Nokia S40 on December 31, 2018 and also the devices that are running of Android versions 2.3.7 and older will also not be able to use WhatsApp from Feb 1, 2020.
It is known that the devices which WhatsApp is going to stop supporting are not that widely used right now. Out of all the Android users, less than 0.1% use Froyo. Talking about Apple, less than 0.3% of iPhone users are running iOS 6 on their devices. Similar is the case with the BlackBerry OS with less than 0.5% and Windows Phones with around 1%. The company says it had to take this decision as these devices cannot support the kind of features the company wishes to provide to it’s users.
This is what the WhatsApp had to say about this announcement.
“As we look ahead to our next seven years, we want to focus our efforts on the mobile platforms the vast majority of people use.”
“While these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future.”
“This was a tough decision for us to make, but the right one in order to give people better ways to keep in touch with friends, family, and loved ones using WhatsApp.”
“If you use one of these affected mobile devices, we recommend upgrading to a newer Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone… to continue using WhatsApp.”
