On the 1st of July, 2017 the Indian government took a reforming step of implementing GST in India. For those who don’t know what GST stands for and what the GST is here for – let me break it down to you.
GST stands for Goods and Services Tax, this tax system is implemented in India to cut down on the VAT and state tax for goods crossing state borders. This notion of GST stands strong as one nation one tax.
According to market researcher firm Counterpoint’s report, about 80 per cent of the 59 million phones sold in the country in the January-March quarter were locally manufactured. These are the ones which will enjoy the low cost for getting their devices out there as they do not have to pay tax to every state in the country to get their product.
“Experts suggest that government will have to come up with incentives by July 1 to ensure government initiatives such as Make in India for contract manufactures like Foxconn remain in works.” reported Deccan Chronicle. But it is clear that there is no such report confirming the same as of now.
While all of this sounds really good here comes the real problem. The tax on the IT related products has been pumped up. Earlier mobile phones in India were charged for 12% tax out of their total cost of sale. Now, after GST everything has changed, the mobile phone sales are now charged at 18% tax. This is huge.
This has made the mobile phones and all the other IT related products way costly than they were already. If you are one of those who is on a budget to buy a smartphone and are now backing out due to GST, then we have a solution for you.
